OSRS Ironman Runecrafting Guide (1–99)

This guide is designed for Ironman accounts with no Grand Exchange access. You'll learn how to gather essence, unlock teleports, and craft every key rune type on the way to 99 Runecrafting.

Levels 1–9: Air Runes

Mine Rune Essence via Aubury in Varrock.
Use the Air Altar west of Varrock.
Use air talismans from drops or tiaras if you've started crafting.
Bank at Varrock east or teleport with Chronicles/Teleport Tabs.

Levels 9–14: Mind Runes

Craft at the Mind Altar (north of Falador).
Use Chronicle teleport to Varrock → run north.
Essence mining stays the same.

Levels 14–23: Water Runes (or Fire/Earth if closer)

Water altar is near Lumbridge swamp.
Earth altar is southeast of Varrock.
Use whatever is closest to a bank or teleport method for faster XP.

Levels 23–44: Lava Runes (Optional) or More Elementals

If you’ve completed Enlightened Journey, lava runes are great with tiaras.
Otherwise, continue with Fire/Earth/Body runes.
Body Altar is west of Barbarian Village.

Levels 44–77: Nature Runes

Use the Nature Altar via fairy rings or spirit trees.
Essence pouch use begins here (small/medium).
Crafting Natures helps fuel High Alchemy and herblore.

Levels 77–91: Blood Runes (Arceuus)

Use the Blood Rune crafting method unlocked after 100% Arceuus favor.
Mine dense essence blocks → chisel → use at blood altar.
No pouches needed. AFK-friendly method with good XP.

Levels 91–99: Soul Runes

Unlocked after completing The Great Brain Robbery.
Also requires 100% Arceuus favor.
Same process as Bloods, but slower XP. Still no pouches required.

Bonus Tips

Train Agility and Stamina potions for faster lap efficiency.
Do Abyss miniquest early to unlock fast altar access (no def XP gained if careful).
Use POH portals for fast altar teleports when you have Construction.
